Reading for Pleasure

At Holmer Lake, we are passionate about providing our children with the life skills and confidence to allow them the very best chance to succeed in life. We understand if our children have a love of reading that this will directly impact, not only their reading attainment, but also their life chances.
"Being a frequent reader is more of an advantage than having well educated parents and finding ways to engage students in reading may be one of the most effective ways to leverage social change." (OECD, 2002:3)

We provide our children a wide range of opportunities for them to enjoy reading, chat informally about books that they enjoy and make recommendations to others. Teaching staff and support staff undertake ongoing professional development which ensures they are knowledgeable about contemporary children's literature. This allows them to engage with children in book talk and with personal book recommendations.
